Hello again, traveler and adventurer around the world!

We will discover in this article how and why to request the European sanitary card.

You will know if you frequently visit here that we like to prepare routes to do with our caravan, both national and national. In fact, some of the most prominent have been essential routes through Portugal, some fabulous around France or our last three bets: north of Italy, central Italy and Sicily.

Whichever destination you choose, you must prepare your trip well, especially if it is an international destination. In addition to keeping your motorhome ready, bring all the necessary accessories and distribute the load well Before starting your trip it is important that you keep in mind that something unexpected can always happen.

One of them (and we hope it does not happen) is that you have to go to the doctor in the country where you are. It doesn't have to be for something serious, but you may need it if you get bitten by a mosquito, have an allergic reaction, or trip over something and fall regularly. They are small incidents that can happen to all of us and that we must foresee how to solve them if we are outside our country.

Therefore, before starting your trip, we recommend that you apply for the European health card to ensure that you can be treated at the doctor wherever you go.

Carrying this card with you does not necessarily imply that the service you receive will be free, since what may be free in Spain may not be so in other destinations. In addition, this card in no case replaces travel insurance nor, in any case, will it serve to be treated in private healthcare facilities.

What use is the European health card for me then?

The European health card (TSE) serves to cover public health care at European level in the same way as we do in Spain with our Social Security card.

Applying for the TSE is completely free and serves the 28 countries of the European Union, Liechtenstein, Switzerland, Norway and Iceland. The care you will receive in these countries does not have to be the same as that you receive in Spain, but it will not be the same as that of the citizens of those countries in particular. That is, in Spain they prescribe antibiotics in the outpatient clinic but it may not be the case in Germany or Romania; If a service is free in Spain, it may not be so in other countries. The TSE is valid for two years.

NOTE: The European Health Card is NOT valid if the ultimate purpose of the trip is to receive medical treatment. In that case, the National Institute of Social Security (INSS) will issue the corresponding form.

How to apply for the European health card?

You can request this card online or in person. Although it seems a bit cumbersome, we recommend that you request it in person. In fact, in the article we show you how to request an appointment to request the TSE in person.

In order to request the card online you must have your electronic ID or your digital certificate. We have tested the process and found it a bit cumbersome if you don't have the active certificate. Therefore, if you can escape at any time to one of the available offices, we recommend this option.
