Having a caravan as a vehicle is synonymous with a different, original and fun lifestyle. You travel where you want, as far as you want, you sleep almost where you want ... Freedom and nature in the same trip, routes through France, routes through Portugal… Lots of interesting options other than classic hotel vacations.

But ... all that glitters is not gold! To maintain a caravan like the first day is not a breeze, you have to take care of it and clean it (and with each use!). After all, it's not the car where you can go storing things in the trunk or dumping empty glasses in the back seat. Your caravan or motorhome is your home! We already saw in a previous article how to clean a caravan inside. Therefore, in this article we focus on how to clean a motorhome on the outside, special products for this, special attention to crystals ... Here we go!

How to clean a motorhome from the outside

It is important to bear in mind that this type of cleaning cannot be done on the street, at the risk of being fined. To avoid problems, it is better go to a washing center. If it weren't for the dimensions and the windows, could we put the motorhome in a car wash with rollers? The answer is yes. But since we are not usually going to find car washes for motorhomes, we will have to do it by hand.

First and foremost, we must clean the outside of the caravan with soap and water. The sheet will have dust from the camping, sand or even an insect that has come to visit us and it is time to eliminate everything. Just a brush and soap to clean and a cloth to dry. Make sure that the brush does not scratch, that it is of soft bristles to avoid some greater evil in the bodywork. As for soap, just as to clean the inside of the motorhome, we will use a mild neutral soap. To finish, you just have to rinse it and dry it with a cloth.

Second, we will clean the tires and wheels of the caravan. Yes, they will get dirty again as soon as we start, but we can remove leaves or embedded mud that cannot remain anchored there for months.

Do not forget to check two motorhome parts that can also be dirty: ceiling, which may have accumulated leaves from trees for example, and engine and mechanical partss, which may also have easily removable remains.

Another important tip for caring for the exterior of motorhomes is to thoroughly grease all the legs and the head of the hitch. You will also need to apply lubricating oil to all the hinges and also to each of the locks on the doors and the hood.

Every year it is convenient check the underbody and, if any damage has been detected, you will have to repair it. In the case of having observed other damages, such as lights that do not work or broken hinges, proceed to repair them so as not to find unpleasant surprises in the next motorhome outing.

Finally, for prolonged parking, it is important to highlight the importance of letting the handbrake loose so that the shoes do not stick to the drum, and of moving the motorhome from time to time in the event of not being able to remove the wheels, because they could be deformed.

How to clean the windows of a motorhome?

We have left the crystals in a different section because they deserve special mention. In addition, they are both inside and out 😉 The windows of the motorhomes are made of methacrylate, an element that can be damaged very easily if we do not pay special attention.

The first step to cleaning the windows, both inside and out, will be remove traces of dirt with soap and water. A scouring pad (without metal part) and mild soap with water will be enough to remove the most adherent remains. Then, for a shiny appearance without traces of water drops, we will pass a soft cloth with glass cleaner smooth for a professional finish.

Windows are a very important element of motorhomes, as they guarantee good visibility for the driver of the vehicle and his passengers. Its materials normally scratch easily, so it is advisable to clean them with mild soap and a large amount of water.

For washing do not use glass cleaner that contain solvents or alcohol, or cloths or brushes that could scratch them. Dry cleaning is also strongly discouraged.
